At MedBridge NZ, we understand the importance of reliable and efficient healthcare, whether at home or abroad. Today, we're sharing a personal account that highlights the remarkable experiences with dental care in China, particularly concerning their son, Ethan. This story offers valuable insights into the quality, efficiency, and affordability of medical services available.

The Initial Challenge: A Persistent Dental Issue and a Misdiagnosis The journey began with a troubling issue: Ethan had a problematic tooth at the back of his mouth. Interestingly, a previous dental visit in England had resulted in an assurance that "everything was fine, no problems whatsoever". However, it became clear that the assessment from the English dentist "seems to have been wrong". Faced with an unresolved issue, the family decided to seek a second opinion at a hospital in China, having heard that the dentists there "are fantastic".
A Seamless Entry into Chinese Healthcare Upon arrival at the hospital, the initial step was registration. Despite concerns that they might have "run out of registration places" for the dentistry department, a visit to a general doctor led to a fortunate turn of events. The hospital "kindly given one more space for my son to go and see" the dentist, showcasing a level of accommodation and helpfulness that was greatly appreciated. The system was described as "so accommodating and so helpful".
Discovering "Stomatology" and Exceptional Care The family was directed to the "stomatology" department. This term itself was a fascinating discovery, as it was previously unfamiliar. Explaining its roots, "stomatology" in Chinese breaks down to "co" for mouth, "shiang" for cavity, and "c" for study – making "complete sense" as the "study of the mouth and its cavities".
Ethan's actual treatment was remarkably swift and professional. He received his filling, X-ray, and medication "in a matter of minutes", with the "whole process...completed in a matter of minutes". Ethan himself was "super happy" and found the entire experience "super easy".
Unmatched Efficiency and Affordability One of the most compelling aspects of this experience was the cost and efficiency. The total cost for the full filling, X-ray, treatment, and subsequent medication was only 287 RMB. This stands in stark contrast to experiences in England, where seeing a dentist typically costs "around about 12 to 15" (likely referring to a basic consultation fee), with prescriptions incurring "on top" charges.
The entire process, from arrival to departure, was completed "within 2 hours". This efficiency was particularly striking when compared to the UK, where "the process and the amount of time that it took was ridiculous" for similar procedures. The "level of service in China" from a "dentistry perspective is incredible".
A Grateful Reflection on Quality and Value The family expressed profound gratitude for the "medical profession within the hospital connected to the dentistry". The "level of professionalism in relation to the cost of the service was incredible", providing high-quality care at a "very cheap" price. This experience truly underscored the "amazing quality as always" and the positive difference that accessible, efficient, and affordable international healthcare can make.
This personal journey serves as a powerful testament to the high standards of care and patient-centric approach found in Chinese medical institutions. It highlights why many, like our team member, are increasingly confident in exploring international options for their healthcare needs.
