Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center | China’s Pioneer in Particle Radiotherapy

Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center (SPHIC) is the first and only hospital in China dedicated to advanced proton and heavy ion radiotherapy. Opened in 2015, SPHIC is a joint initiative of the Shanghai Municipal Government and Fudan University Cancer Hospital. It uses the world’s most advanced particle therapy technologies, capable of precisely destroying tumors while sparing healthy tissue — ideal for complex and inoperable cancers such as brain tumors, pediatric cancers, head & neck cancers, pancreatic cancer, and more.

SPHIC is part of China’s National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure and is the first in Asia and sixth globally to provide carbon ion therapy. Its International Patient Center offers fully bilingual services, second opinions, and streamlined access for global patients.

Key Highlights

  1. Breakthrough Survival Outcomes

    • Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: 92.9% 5-year survival for primary cases; 47% for recurrent cases with pure heavy-ion therapy.

    • Early-Stage Lung Cancer: 70.3% 5-year survival (100% for GGO subtype), near-zero severe toxicity.

    • Prostate Cancer: 100% 5-year cancer-specific survival with minimal urinary toxicity.

  2. World-Class Technology

    • 21m Synchrotron: Adjustable proton (50-221MeV) & carbon-ion (85-430MeV) beams targeting deep-seated tumors.

    • 4 Treatment Rooms: Equipped with respiratory gating and pencil-beam scanning (sub-mm precision).

    • In-Room Mobile CT: Enables real-time image-guided adaptive radiotherapy (global pioneer).

  3. Global Patient Services

    • JCI Accredited: Scored 99.3/100 (2017), the only particle center with this certification.

    • Insurance Coverage: Direct billing with 40+ insurers (e.g., MSH, Ping An); 40% patients covered commercially.

    • Multilingual Support: 16-language interpreters & HIPAA-compliant medical records.

  4. Research Leadership

    • Published the first *10-Year Survival Report* (69.5% overall 5-year survival rate).

    • Leading international consensus on recurrent nasopharynx cancer treatment.

    • Phase II expansion to become the world’s largest particle therapy hub by 2028.
